WT receives $15,000 state grant for free course materials

CANYON, Texas (KVII) -- West Texas A&M University will receive a $15,000 state grant to expand free educational materials for students in nursing and workforce training programs.
Gov. Greg Abbott announced the award as part of more than $2 million in Open Educational Resource grants distributed to nine Texas higher education institutions for the 2026-28 cycle.
The grants support the creation and adoption of openly licensed textbooks and other course materials that students can access at no cost through the OERTX digital library.
WT was one of two universities receiving $15,000 awards. Most of the other recipients, primarily community college districts and Texas State University, received $285,000.
Abbott said the grants will help make education more affordable while supporting training in high-demand fields including nursing, cybersecurity, electrical technology and business.
The state's OER grant program was established in 2018. Since then, it has helped more than 33,000 Texas students and saved an estimated $3.5 million in textbook costs, according to the governor's office.
